Regular Reindeer Food in Real Life

Real reindeer — the kind you can see at a zoo or in the wild — eat things like grass, leaves, mosses, and lichens. They are very well adapted to cold climates and can dig through snow with their wide hooves to find food underneath. They also eat mushrooms, twigs, and small shrubs. In winter, when food is hard to find, real reindeer travel long distances to find enough to eat.

Santa's Reindeer Eat Something Special

Santa's reindeer are not ordinary reindeer, and they don't eat ordinary food. At the North Pole, Mrs. Claus and the elves prepare a special diet for them year-round. This includes magical oats mixed with sugar and starlight (yes, real starlight), plus warm mash made from northern grains. It gives them the strength and energy they need to fly all night long without getting tired.

Reindeer Food on Christmas Eve

Many children leave a bowl of reindeer food outside on Christmas Eve to help fuel the team during their journey. Traditional reindeer food is often made of oats and glitter (safe, biodegradable glitter) spread on the lawn or garden. The glitter helps the reindeer spot your house from up in the sky, and the oats give them a little mid-flight snack.

Carrots for the Reindeer

In some countries, especially the United Kingdom and Ireland, children leave out carrots for Santa's reindeer alongside the cookies and milk left for Santa. It's a lovely tradition, and the reindeer appreciate it very much. Dasher and Dancer, in particular, are known for having a weakness for fresh carrots.
