The Escape to Egypt

Ho ho ho! Now, the wise men had slipped safely away by a different road, and that was good news indeed. But there was still the matter of King Herod, sitting in his palace with that jealous heart of his. And once Herod realized the wise men weren't coming back to report to him, well — he was not a happy king. Not one bit.

So once again, heaven stepped in to protect that precious little family. And once again, it happened in the quiet of the night.

You'll remember that Joseph — good, steady, dependable Joseph — was a man who paid attention to his dreams. And one night, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream with an urgent message. "Get up," the angel said. "Take the child and His mother and escape to Egypt. Stay there until I tell you, for Herod is going to search for the child to harm Him."

Now, this was not an easy thing to ask of a man. Egypt was far away. It was a foreign land, with foreign customs and a foreign language. Joseph had a home, a trade, a life in his own country. Pulling up stakes and fleeing in the middle of the night to a strange land — that's a frightening, exhausting, uncertain thing to do.

But do you know what Joseph did? Exactly what he always did. He got up. That very night, the Good Book says, he took the child and His mother and left for Egypt. No delay. No long debate. No "Let's wait until morning and think it over." When the message came, Joseph trusted it and acted on it, immediately, to keep his family safe.

There he is again, my friends — quiet, faithful Joseph, doing the right thing without fuss or fanfare. Picture it. A father gathering up his little family in the dark, loading the donkey, and setting off across the desert toward safety, all to protect the child entrusted to his care. No complaints. No hesitation. Just steady, loving action.

And that's exactly what fathers and mothers have done since the beginning of time, isn't it? They protect their little ones. They go to extraordinary lengths, they make enormous sacrifices, they travel hard roads and lose plenty of sleep — all to keep their children safe. Joseph and Mary fled to a foreign country with nothing but each other and that precious child, simply because the child's safety mattered more than their own comfort.

Now Santa keeps a watchful eye on children all over the world, so this part of the story always touches my heart. Because protecting the little ones, keeping them safe and cared for, is one of the most important and loving things anyone can ever do.

So this Christmas, let's tip our hats to all the Josephs and Marys of the world — every parent and grandparent and guardian who would cross a desert in the dark to keep their children safe. That's love in action, my friends. The very best kind.

Merry Christmas, everyone! Ho ho ho! https://santaclaus.top/the-escape-to-egypt/
